Investment Philosophy - Value & Catalyst Driven Investing
"We seek to invest in fundamentally undervalued firms, basing our thesis off sound catalysts observed for the firm.”
SMF is primarily based around student learning through hands on equity research application. Because the primary objective of the Fund is to provide a learning experience for students, we approach our portfolio with a balance of value and event driven investing. The fund focuses on healthy fundamentals and compelling company specific catalysts within economic, market, and firm specific factors.
Strong Fundamentals: Strong business model, quality asset base, and healthy debt levels, stable cash flows, and a clearly defined & stable value proposition.
Compelling Catalysts: Comprehensive understanding of how a firm operates, and to what degree real world events affect material value. The “story” and impact of qualitative factors are at the core of our screening and pitching process.
Long-Term Value: The Fund is designed to operate indefinitely, and the investment process is viewed as a long-term plan for achieving the desired results. Opportunities must provide long term value, with catalysts acting as an entry point into our position.
